Marie Walshe

Marie Walshe is a Mezzo Soprano and voice tutor from Limerick.  At age 15, Marie won RTE’s Voice of Promise competition which led to her first of three appearances on The Late Late Show. At 19, Marie performed on Good Morning America, in New York. Following her graduation from the  College of Music, Dublin, (DIT), where she was awarded the Silver Medal of Excellence, Marie was awarded the Irish Philharmonic Society Scholarship to study in Italy.

Marie has worked as a freelance opera singer for many years and has sung throughout Europe America and Japan. Her operatic debut was with Welsh National Opera in New York. Other roles include, Dorabella (Cosi van Tutti), Mistress Quickly (Falstaff), Florence Pike (Albert Herring), Carmen (Carmen), Maddelena (Rigoletto),  Meg Page (Falstaff), Grimgerde (Die Walkyrie), Pheobe (Yeomen of the Guard), Valencienne (The Merry Widow), Prince Orlovsky (Die Fledermaus) and many more.These roles were performed at Glyndebourne Festival, English National Opera, Sadler’s Wells, Welsh National Opera, Opera de Nantes, English Touring Opera, City of Birmingham Touring Opera, Opera Ireland, Opera Theatre Company, Opera South, Kinsale Opera and Opera Cork.

Broadcasts and television appearances include: Messiah from the NCH. Chio Mi Scordi Di Te ( Mozart ) with National Symphony Orchestra; Verdi Requiem from the Cork Choral Festival, Opera Gala with National Symphony Orchestra and several recitals. Tune In, Bibi and Live at 3 for RTE and Tippet’s New Year for BBC.

Since returning to her native Limerick Marie’s time has been spent on the development of a regimen of vocal exercise and breath management, conducive to supporting the very varied genres in which she works, ie: chant, classical, opera, musical theatre, gospel, sean nos and folk.
In the past 10 years Marie’s students have taken  over 100 lead roles in Musical theatre productions throughout the Midwest region. Marie is currently a voice tutor on both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the Irish Academy of World Music and Dance.
