Mairéad Vaughan is a choreographer, dance artist, and dance researcher. She graduated from Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Leeds, with a BA in Performing Arts (Dance), The Irish World Academy of Music and Dance with an MA in Contemporary Dance Performance, where she is currently undertaking an Arts Practice PhD researching her choreographic practice.
Having received Arts Council travel awards to study Bharatanatyam and yoga in India, Mairead co-founded Shakram Dance Company in 1999. She spent over ten years researching and developing her own interpretations and movement vocabulary informed by the gestural, rhythmic and sculptural nature of Bharatanatyam. She has since travelled to Peru, Ecuador, Borneo, Malaysia and Thailand to research and study a variety of world dance forms. Mairead has choreographed an eclectic body of multi-disciplinary, collaborative theatre work with influences ranging from dance video art, film, live voice, live music and site-specific performance. Her work has been presented in festivals both nationally and internationally, including Dublin Fringe Festival, Dublin Dance Festival and the Illios Festival, Norway. Shakram have been awarded numerous Arts Council project awards and research bursaries to date.
Mairead’s choreographic work has been selected for and supported by professional choreographic residencies including ‘Blank Canvas’, Firkin Crane (2011), ‘Choreographic Initiative’, Dance Ireland (2008) and ‘Incubation Space’, The Lab, Dublin City Council Arts Centre (2008) as well as ‘Irish Choreographer’s New Works Platform’, The Association of Professional Dancers of Ireland (now Dance Ireland – 1998 – 2005). Mairead was dance artist in residence in Drogheda (2004), where she devised a strategy for developing contemporary dance in the area through professional performance, community outreach and educational projects. She founded two youth dance companies: Drogheda Youth Dance Co, 2003 and Core Dance Co, 2007. She worked as movement director and choreographer for Drogheda’s Upstate Theatre Company in producing and touring the critically acclaimed play, ‘The Green Fool’. In 2008 she was commissioned to choreograph work for Crux Dance Company, which toured throughout Ireland. More recently Mairead founded, developed and curated a platform called ‘MotionCapture’ to promote and screen Irish and International contemporary short dance films in association with Cork Film Festival and Firkin Crane.
From 1999 to 2001, Mairead danced with Daghdha Dance Company performing and touring work by renowned national and international choreographers such as Mary Nunan (IRE), Steve Paxton (USA), Mark Baldwin (UK), Yoshiko Chuma (JPN), Jody Melnick (USA) and Paul Johnson (IRE).
