ÓSCAR MASCAREÑAS (PhD) is an Irish-based, Mexican-born composer, poet, performer and musicologist. He has a PhD in Music, and an MA in Chant and Ritual Song from the University of Limerick, in Ireland; and holds a BSc in Industrial Physics and Engineering from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, in Mexico.
Óscar has presented his research internationally in the Americas and Europe, and has been invited to lead workshops and inter-disciplinary projects in different institutions, including Aldeburgh Music, the University of Bristol, Coventry University and the Bluecoat Centre for the Contemporary Arts (UK); the University of the State of Nuevo León and the Escuela Superior de Música y Danza de Monterrey (Mexico), and the NUI Maynooth (Ireland). His compositions and writings have been performed and published in Ireland, the UK, Mexico, Slovakia and Hungary, and he has collaborated and performed with artists from Mexico, Ireland, the UK, France, Argentina, Belgium, Switzerland, the United States and Estonia.
Óscar is one of the four founding members of the Composers Centre of the State of Nuevo León (which is sponsored by the CONACULTA – the National Council for the Culture and the Arts, in Mexico), and has twice been the recipient of grants to compose works for chamber ensembles (1998 and 1999). One of his works for saxophone and piano (‘Samson dux fortissime’) was recorded and produced by the Ministry of Culture of Nuevo León in the year 2000. He is also a Latin-American music performer, and has arranged, performed, produced and recorded Latin-American music for the past 26 years.
From December 2003 to November 2005 he was Assistant Course Director of the Master of Arts in Chant and Ritual Song programme at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, and from December 2005 to January 2007 Acting Course Director of the same programme. He founded and directed the Gregorian chant ensemble Musica Disciplina, and for a number of years was a guest director of the vocal ensemble Lucernarium at the University of Limerick. With both ensembles he produced a chant CD – Vox Prophetica – and co-produced a choral/chant CD – Cuairt Mhuire/Visitation – in May 2005. He was the Executive Artistic Director of the Second Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) Music Camp I’mPULSE GOL: ‘A Gathering of Voices from Asia and Europe’, organised by ASEF and the Irish World Academy in November 2005.
Óscar is the founding course director of the BA in Voice and Dance at the Academy (2008 to 2013), and currently a full-time researcher and lecturer in the same institution. He is the founder conductor of the Irish ensemble HIBERNIA, and is also guest conductor of the Sinfonietta of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL), and the Chamber Orchestra of the Universidad Regiomontana, both in Monterrey, Mexico. Óscar is also the founding Chair of the Cage-Cunningham Professorship in Contemporary Performance at the Escuela Superior de Música y Danza de Monterrey of the National Institute for the Fine Arts in Mexico.
He is an active member of various professional associations, such as the Irish Association of Mexican Studies, Dance Research Forum Ireland (Board member), the Society for Musicology in Ireland, the Network of Mexican Professionals in Ireland, and CANTUS PLANUS from the International Musicological Society, amongst others.
At the Irish World Academy he currently teaches improvisation and composition for voice and dance, musical palaeography and semiotics, medieval and contemporary vocal performance, Latin-American music and dance, Western choral music and voice skills for performance. His research interests cover a wide range of subjects including, poetry, performative poetry, music and dance performance, the concept of time in music and dance composition and performance, contemporary practice, somatic approaches to music composition, music education, early music and the philosophy of music, amongst many others.
