LOGO SEMINAR SERIES- Composing the Mongrel: an arts practice exploration of hybridity

February 6, 2020 at 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Presenter: Dr. Matthew James Noone
Abstract

This seminar is a work in progress presentation of my current Irish Research Council fellowship entitled Composing the Mongrel.  The research is an arts practice exploration of cultural hybridity and the effectiveness of ‘mongrelity’ as an embodied paradigm in post-modern music making. It focuses on a theorization of my own artistic practice using a custom built hybrid North Indian lute in collaboration with three composers to create a new body of work.  The research is informed by performance theory (Melrose, 2002; Cook, 2003) and arts practice epistemology (Nelson, 2013; Leavy; 2015) which argues that artistic process is a valuable site of cultural knowledge.  I would like to use this opportunity to review some of my research output to date and discuss some of my initial findings.   Through interactive discussion, I would also like to attempt to put some flesh on the bones of the ‘mongrel’ as music making metaphor.
Conference room, IW1.008, 10:00-12:00pm
