LOGO SEMINAR SERIES- Jewish song and singing – inside and outside the synagogue

March 12, 2020 at 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Presenter: Yanky Fachler, MA

Abstract:
This seminar will present themes and sounds that have influenced Jewish song and singing over the centuries. We will trace the journey from Torah cantillation and synagogue chanting through to the 18th century Hassidic nigun, via two influential 20th century songwriters (Shlomo Carlebach and Debbie Friedman) to modern singers like Yaakov Shweky who performs in packed stadiums. Barbara Streisand and Leonard Cohen will also feature as we explore the interplay of all these influences.

Biography:
Yanky Fachler developed an early interest in Torah cantillation, and has been teaching boys and girls their barmitzvah portions since he was 11. While not a trained cantor, Yanky has been leading synagogue services in England, Ireland, the USA and Israel for over 50 years. In civilian life, Yanky is a copywriter, ghostwriter, editor, narrator, corporate trainer and founder/chair of the Jewish Historical Society of Ireland.
