Karaikudi S. Subramanian, born in 1944 is a 9th generation Veena player in the illustrious ‘Karaikudi Veena Tradition’.
Karaikudi S. Subramanian, grandson of the elder of the Karaikudi Brothers, was adopted by Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer (his great-uncle) to continue the lineage of the tradition. As a top-grade veena player for All India Radio, he performed with his sister Rajeswari Padmanabhan and Ranganayaki Rajagopalan (Both prominent disciples of Sambasiva Iyer) in concerts. He has also accompanied eminent artists such as Dr. T.Viswanathan and Sri. K.V. Narayanaswamy. Greatest of Mridangam maestros such as Prof. Trichy Sankaran, Sri. T.K Murthy, Sri. Umayalpuram Sivaraman and Sri. Palghat Raghu, have performed with him at prestigious institutions. He has widely toured Europe, North America and South East Asia as a performer and as visiting professor in many prestigious universities. In 1985, Dr. Subramanian earned a Ph.D in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University, with a dissertation on “South Indian Vina Tradition and Individual Style.” He retired as a professor from the University of Madras in 2002. He founded Brhaddhvani, Research and Training Centre for Musics of the World, in Chennai in 1989.
