Lunchtime Concert – Percussion: The Limits of Music – Ivan Manzanilla

Mexican percussionist Ivan Manzanilla is a specialist in contemporary percussion music. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Mexico’s Autonomous National University and a Master and Doctoral degree from the University of California, San Diego. Ivan Manzanilla’s work centres on the exploration and dissemination of newly created music andart. His work has been recognised by different institutions like the Rockefeller Foundation, the National University of Mexico, Mexico’s National Fine Arts Institute, the National Fund for Culture and Arts and the Darmstadt Summer Course. He is the head of the Percussion Department at the University of Guanajuato, in Mexico, and he is a recipient of the National Fund for the Arts’ Established Artists Grant.
This concert is jointly presented by the Irish World Academy, the Computer Science & Information Systems department (CSIS) and the Digital Media and Arts Research Centre (DMARC). The programme includes the following works: “Aphasia” (2010) by Mark Applebaum; “Free Range Composer” (2018) by Jude Weirmeir; “Borderlines” (2018) by Juan Campoverde; “Pop Wuj I” (2018) by Salvador Torre; “Sequitur XI” (2008) by Karlheinz Essl; and “Temazcal” (1985) by Javier Alvarez. Ivan Manzanilla’s visit is funded by the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes in Mexico.
