Special Event – Sounding Kenmare Butter Market: Past and Future (PhD Arts Practice Performance)
November 29 - December 2
Presenter: JJ Riordan
In this performance, JJ Riordan employs his found sound techniques (using everyday sounds to create musical soundscapes and compositions) to navigate the social, commercial and historical significances of an iconic site in his hometown of Kenmare, Co. Kerry. This site, which is located in the heart of Kenmare, has served many functions over its 150+ year history. From humble beginnings as a local butter market, to a popular ballroom location and commercial retailing site, the space now operates as the Kenmare Butter Market Arts Exhibition Space. JJ weaves together interviews, historical information and compositional techniques to create and showcase an immersive installation, re-capturing the site’s sonic and functional identities. JJ Riordan is a 3rd year PhD Arts Practice student at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance.
