THE TOWER SEMINAR SERIES – Jewish Cantillation

This seminar offers an introduction to the fascinating history
and contemporary practice of cantillation, the ritual chanting
of readings from the Hebrew Bible based on a system of
notational symbols called “ta’amei hamikra.” We will learn
about the grammatical foundation of this ancient trope, and
we will hear live examples of different Hebrew texts sung by
Yanky Fachler, who was trained in Jewish cantillation at the
age of nine and regularly chants from the Torah in synagogue.
Dr Yonit Kosovske will lead a discussion about the diverse
array of musical styles and melodies that Jewish traditions
and communities around the world have passed down orally
through the centuries.
Yanky Fachler is a motivational speaker, historian, writer
and cantor. Born in the UK to Holocaust survivors, he is
founder/chair of the Jewish Historical Society of Ireland, and
has addressed audiences around the globe. He is the author
of many books on Zionist history and on the history of the
Irish Jewish community.
