Archives of oral culture present unique challenges for archivists and researchers alike. This seminar has the format of a round table discussion on different aspects of traditional song in the archives. Steve Roud is renowned as the creator of the Roud Index, and has spent much of his career working with traditional song archives. Martin Greabe is the author of several books on traditional songs, including As I Walked Out: Sabine Baring-Gould and the Search for the Folk Songs of Devon and Cornwall. Grace Toland is a singer and organiser with the Inishowen Traditional Singers’ Circle, and also works at the Irish Traditional Music Archive. The role of song and performance archives to fuel contemporary tradition, weaves continuously throughout projects and events she organises. The discussion will be jointly chaired by Kara O’Brien, Irish World Academy PhD researcher in traditional song, as well as Academy Director, Dr Sandra Joyce.
Admission is free and all are welcome.
